If you live in an energy deregulated state, then you know that you have options and can choose from a number of energy retailers. If you’re not familiar with this concept (some people aren’t, even though they live in a deregulated state), then it’s much like a cell phone or cable company – you can choose who you get your service with. This provides competition and often better prices for the consumer.
Honestly, some folks are a bit reluctant to switch to other providers and rightly so. You do need to do your homework – especially if you are getting into a contract agreement. Things to consider when switching energy providers are:
-
Is the price a fixed or variable rate?
-
Fixed: It will be the same price per kilowatt hour or therm throughout the term of the contract. In some states everyone has a contract no matter which supplier you go with. In other states most don’t have a contract, but a few ESCO’s (Energy Service Companies) will try and rope you into one anyway
-
Variable: This is how most of the Incumbent Providers (the main energy companies) in New York charge. Each month it’s a different rate per kilowatt hour or per therm. It changes every single month.
-
-
Is there a contract? In some states, such as Texas, everyone has a contract no matter what ESCO you go with, so now you just need to determine if you like the terms of the contract. What is it offering you? How long is it for? Sometimes there are annual contracts, sometimes they are as little as a few months. Other times they may be as long as 2 or 3 years. Be sure you understand before you sign!
-
Is there an Early Termination Fee? In other words, if you want to get out of the contract early, will it cost you anything and how much?
-
What are the Perks? Some ESCO’s offer you things like a pre-paid VISA card or other gift card to sign up with them. That’s nice, but if you are signing a year contract and their rates are higher than the incumbent (they often are), then what good is it doing you?
The bottom line is don’t let anyone talk you into anything and don’t give anyone any information about your bill or other personal information. Some ESCO’s employees sign people up without their knowledge by just getting a little personal information from them.
What is my interest in this and how do I know any of this? Because I’m a consultant with Ambit Energy. An independent consultant – not an employee; and I have been partnered with Ambit for just over 4 years. When I first heard about Ambit I didn’t even know I had a choice to switch to another provider in New York State. I was thrilled! I switched to Ambit immediately. But when I decided to partner with Ambit and start my own business I found that others were not as quick to get switched – including my dad. Now he is in his 70’s and I understand he’s a bit old fashioned in his thinking and at that time I had JUST joined the business, so he didn’t know too much about the company, and honestly neither did I.
Here’s Ambit’s concept of doing network marketing as a business model rather than traditional marketing and using employees: Friends and Family make the most loyal customers. That’s it. It’s that simple and it’s so true. My brother’s, our kids, close friends – they all become customers eventually. The reason was not because they thought they were getting such a great deal. The reason was because they know, love and trust me. Likewise Ambit Energy has made it a point to let consultant’s know that they get it. They know that those closest to us are trusting us with something important – their electricity and natural gas bills; and so Ambit knows that they need to “get it right, not just some of the time, but all of them time.” (Jere Thompson, CEO/Co-founder). Our reputation’s are on the line as consultants. Our friends and family are trusting us – and we are trusting Ambit, and it works!
Well apparently Ambit Energy got it right enough, because this week my dad finally became my customer. So you know, when even my dad is doing this, something is working!
